I received a tsunami of emails responding to my recent column on grammar peeves. Apparently, I'm not the only one who chafes at the verbal and written missteps of my friends, colleagues and customers. The following loyal readers sent in their peeves.
Peggy and Sue at the post office:
A preposition dangling at the end of a sentence, as in “Chop it up.” Winston Churchill once said the following about dangling prepositions: “That is a practice up with which I shall not put.”
Unnecessary use of “that” in written communication, as in “We do it because this is the way that we always have.” Remove the “that” and all is still well.
Saying “vetran” when speaking of our military heroes. It’s veteran, sir.
