Lexington, KY – As a part of Alltech 8th Annual Kentucky Ale Pro-Am Brew-Off, a married Lexington couple will see their homebrew recipe sold on tap throughout Lexington.
This year’s champ, a robust porter described as “a dark, light-bodied, chocolaty ale with a dry finish,” brewed during Lexington’s Craft Beer Week in May by the husband and wife team of Chad and Mary Shive, will be made commercially by Alltech’s Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company.
“I’m very excited that the people of Lexington and surrounding communities will have the chance to taste something that my wife and I crafted,” Chad Shive said in a release from Alltech.
A panel of brewing experts and master distillers served as judges in the competition and assigned each beer entry a scaled rating for flavor, aroma, appearance, color, mouthfeel and overall likeability in picking the yet to be named porter by the couple that has been brewing in their garage since 2008.
“It was great to see them rewarded for their continued efforts and participation,” said Ken Lee, master brewer and brewery manager of Alltech Lexington Brewing and Distilling Co.
In addition to a trophy cup and having their beer sold commercially at bars later this summer, the Shives will also receive a trip to Denver and a submission to compete in the Great American Beer Festival, Oct. 2 – 4. The nationwide festival draws visitors from all over the world with the opportunity to sample 2,800 different American beers from 600 breweries. Each year the winner of the homebrew competition is entered into the Pro-Am category at the Denver-based beer festival.
Participants in the brew-off are required to make their beer onsite at Alltech’s brewery and bring all of their own equipment and ingredients except for water and yeast which is provided by Alltech.
