Lexmark has acquired Toronto-based software provider Claron Technology, Inc. for a cash purchase price of roughly $37 million.
Claron specializes in software used for medical-image viewing, distribution, sharing and collaboration. The company’s image-viewing platform provides Web-based access to medical images kept in separate archiving systems, enabling medical professionals to retrieve and review the images in real-time to improve patient care. The company’s technology helps healthcare delivery organizations provide universal access to patient imaging studies and other content across multiple healthcare enterprises.
"Digital content in all forms continues to exponentially grow, particularly in health care. Physicians, other providers and the health information exchanges must be equipped to utilize this content more quickly and collaborate more efficiently to better serve patients," said Paul Rooke, Lexmark's chairman and chief executive officer. "The acquisition of Claron further differentiates Lexmark by providing solutions to help physicians and providers view images across devices and the enterprise, enabling better collaboration and patient care."
Claron will report to Lexmark-owned Perceptive Software. The acquisition will expand Perceptive Software’s offering to health-care providers by enabling them to collaborate on patient information and imagery kept outside the electronic medical record (EMR) systems and providing easy Web-based access via desktop and mobile devices.
"By incorporating Claron technology into Perceptive Software's medical content management solutions, we will further enable health-care delivery organizations to share the information needed to make better care decisions,” said Claudio Gatti, Claron's co-founder and co-chief executive officer.
The surgical navigation aspect of Claron’s business will not transfer to Lexmark as part of the transaction. It will continue to operate under the name Claronav.
