Lucky’s Market, which bills itself as a natural and organic grocery store, will officially open the doors of its first Lexington location Jan. 27.
The store is located at 1030 S. Broadway in the South Broadway Marketplace off Virginia Avenue. It will be the 16th U.S. location for the Boulder, Colorado-based franchise. Officials say about 150 people will be employed at the 47,000-square-foot Lexington facility.
With its “organic for the 99%” moniker, Lucky’s positions and markets itself as a lower-cost alternative for organic foods than competitors such as Whole Foods. Started in 2003 by chefs Trish and Bo Sharon, Lucky’s Market will offer a large selection of local produce, fresh seafood and baked goods.
It also will offer a selection of antibiotic- and hormone-free meats, in-house cured and smoked bacon, a fresh juice and smoothie bar, daily made-from-scratch meals that can be consumed in the store, as well as an array of beer, wine and spirits.
In “The Kitchen,” where the store’s prepared foods can be found, customers can expect to find in-house roasted and smoked deli meats and fresh sandwiches, along with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.
Lucky’s will celebrate the opening with a “bacon-cutting” ceremony at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27. Local food will be provided and more than $11,500 in grants will be donated to two Lexington non-profit organizations: Food Chain, an agricultural company that teaches innovative ways to grow food in an urban area; and Greenhouse 17, an advocacy agency attempting to end intimate partner abuse.
On Saturday, Jan. 30, the location will host “Taste of Lucky’s Market” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature product vendors, food samples and gift basket giveaways. Through April 1, Lucky’s will be offering reusable bag credits. Customers can choose either a 10-cent credit or opt to send a donation to one of the following organizations: Tweens Nutrition and Fitness Coalition, Seedleaf or Arbor Youth Services.
