Blue Grass Airport and United Airlines announced Tuesday that the airline will begin offering daily direct service to the New York City region beginning this summer.
Airport officials said bookings are available immediately for service from the Lexington airport to Newark Liberty International Airport, which is 14 miles outside of Manhattan. The service is scheduled to start July 1.
“This new flight is an excellent opportunity for travelers to access this popular gateway for New York City as well as a connection point for international destinations,” Eric Frankl, executive director at Blue Grass Airport, said in a statement. “United Airlines now provides service to three destinations — Chicago O’Hare, Houston and Newark, [New Jersey]. We are thankful for the airline’s commitment to our community and appreciate the investment they have made to serve the transportation needs of our region.”
Officials said the Lexington-to-Newark flights will be served on a regional jet with a 50-person capacity. From Newark, United offers about 80 daily non-stop flights to about 70 sites worldwide.
The news follows an announcement in January of additional flights from Blue Grass Airport via Allegiant airline
to Washington, D.C. and Savannah, Georgia. That services is scheduled to begin in early June.
