Lexington, KY - In support of Local First Lexington (LFL), a non-profit association representing the interest of nearly 200 locally-owned, independent businesses in the Lexington area, Smiley Pete Publishing has been challenging our readers to complete most, if not all, of their holiday shopping at the businesses that help contribute to Lexington's unique, independent culture.
The mission of Local First Lexington, part of which is to help spread the word about the important social and economic benefits that local businesses bring to the community, has really resonated with many in Lexington, and we've been delighted by the feedback to these challenges from our readers and retailers alike.
Building on this "Buy Local" impetus, which has been steadily gaining local inertia since the 2008 formation of LFL, the group is upping the incentive to shop locally this holiday season. The 2010 Local First Shopping Challenge will present $500, redeemable at any of the Local First Lexington member businesses, to one lucky local shopper.
To enter, participants must collect receipts from at least 10 LFL member businesses, showing purchases made between November 15, 2010 and January 9, 2011. A complete listing of the nearly 200 member businesses, which include retail, dining, and various services, from pets to automotive, can be found at www.localfirstlexington.com. Shoppers then bring their receipts to one of the designated sponsor sites for verification and to be entered into the prize drawing. Sponsors are Worlds Apart, Lucia's World Friendly Boutique, SavanÈ Silver, South Hill Gallery, Happy Place, St. John & Myers, The Cutting Garden Floral Market and Failte Irish Import Shop.
Studies have shown that local businesses help keep two to three times as much money in the local economy than do national chains, while adding unique character and service that can't be found in chain and "big-box" stores. Local First Lexington's administrator, Christin Helmuth, said the group hopes the contest will help stress the importance of patronizing locally-owned independent businesses during the holiday season and throughout the year.
"Local businesses add distinctive character to Lexington, offer a high level of customer service, and provide a greater economic benefit to the community," said Helmuth.
