Picnic with the Pops at Keeneland
8 - 10 p.m. Aug. 21
Picnic with the Pops, a staple summer event in Lexington for more than 30 years, has made a cozy home for itself at the Kentucky Horse Park for the past quarter of a century. But because the horse park will be busy with last minute preparations for the Alltech FEI Games in August, this year Keeneland has signed on as a foster home for the event, which will include a handful of other notable changes: it will be one night only instead of two, and will include the addition of visual accompaniment of internationally renowned aerialists and acrobatics from Cirque de la Symphonie.
Tom Minter, chairman of Picnic with the Pops, has been affiliated with the Lexington event since the '70s and promises this year to be the event's most spectacular presentation yet.
The cirque artists, who include aerial flyers, acrobats, contortionists, dancers, jugglers, balancers and strongmen, will choreograph their movement to accompany the music performed by the Lexington Philharmonic with conductor Scott Terrell. This will be the first Picnic with the Pops under Terrell's direction.
Tickets will be made available to last year's Picnic with the Pops ticketholders first. Beginning June 7, they will be made available to the general public. For tickets and more information, call (859) 233-3535.
