According to the Lexington Division of Police, Lexington has experienced a citywide increase in car break-ins during recent months; a number of Chevy Chaser Magazine distribution area residents have reported car break-ins in neighborhoods ranging from Kenwick to Ashland Park to Lansdowne-Merrick. The Lexington Division of Police have issued a number of handful of tips to help curb Larceny from Auto (LFA), which they consider to be "a very preventable crime:"
Lock your doors: Keep windows and sunroofs closed; and doors locked.
Hide your valuables: Keep your belongings out of sight – either in the glove box or locked in the trunk. After you’ve hidden your belongings, don’t forget to hide the evidence; such as power plugs, MP3 adapters and GPS suction cup mounts.
Don't leave your keys in the car: Take your keys with you. Do not leave spare keys under the mat, above the visor or in a center console. Thieves know to look there.
Stow your valuables before arrival: Experienced thieves often stake out parking lots to watch for people putting items in their trunk. Help prevent car break-ins by putting valuables, like laptops, messenger bags and electronic devices, into your trunk before you get to the parking lot.
Trust your instincts: If you see suspicious activity, find another spot to park. If you’re concerned, tell the attendant or report your suspicions to police. You may be helping keep another person from being a victim of a car break-in.
