The 11th annual "Thriller" Halloween parade, based around Michael Jackson's popular 1983 music video, will hit the streets of Lexington this Sunday evening, Oct. 29, with new and expanded activities and a larger-than-ever crowd expected. The event is presented as a partnership between Lexington Parks and Recreation, Mecca, and the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government. Rain date is Monday, Oct. 29.
Two hours of pre-show activities are among the changes to this year's event, which is one of the largest that downtown Lexington experiences all year. From 6-8 p.m., the CentrePointe block will feature acts by the Pickled Brothers Circus and their sideshow Cabinet of Curiosities; a kid's only Thriller dance led by a "little Michael Jackson;" a magic show; and a variety show that features the crowning of the Zombie King and Queen, performances by Mecca Live Studio and the March Madness Marching Band and more.
At 7:45, Main Street will close to make way for the parade, which starts at the Kentucky Theater at 8:30 p.m. and circles around to end at Mill St. The parade will feature four completely separate sets starting simultaneously at the Kentucky Theater, at Martin Luther King and Main St., in front of the Downtown Arts Center and in front of TrusT Lounge. "Thriller" zombies will be followed by a parade of community participants demonstrating their Halloween spirit and creativity.
Food trucks, warm drinks and "cozy fall treats" will have a presence at the event, which will be followed by an after-party at Cheapside 5/3 Pavilion featuring the Ford Theatre Reunion from 10 - 11 p.m.. Audience members are asked to stay off the street at all times during the parade.
