Despite being the third largest league in Lexington (now with over 600 players), Eastern Little League was the only league without a lighted field prior to Tuesday. Though most of their games are played at Ecton Park, restrictions prohibited them from installing lights there.
Mindy Woodall, the League president, attests to the importance of having the ability to play night games. “We’ve had to have our games start at 4:00 and 4:30, which is very difficult for working parents,” she said. “Also, our older players who are in middle school don’t get out until around 4:00.”
The new lights enable the league to eliminate all those early start times. “It also gives us some flexibility and frees up some time for make-up games,” Woodall said.
The league paid for the lights themselves, which cost $110,000. To help cover the costs, the organization is hosting a fundraiser at Sal’s Banquet Room on April 12. Starting at 8 p.m., the event is called “Light Em’ Up” and will include food, drinks and music.
