LexArts is now accepting applications for grants to be awarded to individual artists or arts organizations whose specific programs demonstrate “clear and artistic social benefits and are accessible to the general public.” Last year’s recipients included organizations such as the Lexington Philharmonic, Lexington Children’s Theatre and the Living Arts and Science Center. The deadline for grant application submissions will be March 13, 2015 for the 2016 fiscal year, which runs between July 1, 2015 and June 30, 2016. Applications will be reviewed in the spring.
Two types of grants will be awarded for 2016. General Operating Support grants (GOS) will fund selected year-round arts organizations that exemplify not only an artistic mission, but also fiscal responsibility and sound management. This type of grant is made out in amounts of $10,000 or more and provides funding for general operations, such as staff, overhead and program costs. Applicants who have not previously received GOS funding must submit an Intent to Apply form by 5 p.m. on February 13, 2015.
The second type of grant, the competitive Community Arts Development (CAD), will fund projects – such as festivals, readings, performances and exhibitions – in amounts varying from $500-$2,500, and programs – such as a series of visual arts exhibitions or performing arts shows – in amounts varying from $2,500-$10,000. Last year, 14 organizations received a grand total of $63,000.
“We look forward once again to providing as much support in 2015 to our cultural partners as our resources permit,” said LexArts Grants Committee Chair David Smith.
2014 project recipients included artist Camilo Quintana, whose Latino Art Blend Exhibit reflected the talent of Hispanic artists living in Lexington and surrounding areas. The Lyric Theatre was another of several chosen grant recipients, for its project in presenting the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company for the 26th annual Roots & Heritage Festival.
2014 program recipients included Kentucky Ballet Theatre and the Lexington Ballet Company, the Kentucky Women Writers Conference, the Carnegie Center for Literacy & Learning, and several musical programs.
