Fayette County Public Schools have called off the school the remainder of the week (Thursday, February 19, 2015 and Friday, February 20, 2015), due to inclement weather conditions.
Afternoon and evening student activities are cancelled for all schools, including the elementary honors chorus on Thursday, which district spokeswoman Lisa Deffendall notes the district will try to reschedule.
The School Rezoning listening session originally scheduled for this week has been rescheduled for Tuesday, February 24, 2015 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Millcreek Elementary. The committee will not meet on Thursday, February 19, 2015.
More information on the Fayette County school District rezoning is posted at http://www.fcps.net/zones.
Alan Stein, chairman of the Fayette County School's rezoning committee, posted the following letter to the public following the Feb. 10 committee meeting:
Tonight’s meeting of the school rezoning committee was spent making small adjustments to the proposed elementary and middle school boundaries in response to some of the public input we have received. Our actions tonight continue to speak to the commitment of this group to listen to our community, weighing a myriad of disparate interests and developing attendance boundaries that will best serve the children and families of Fayette County.
Versions of the new draft maps will be posted as soon as possible tomorrow at www.fcps.net/zones. We fully expect that these maps will continue to evolve over the next several weeks.
No matter how hard we work, our committee understands that not everyone will be pleased with the drafts we develop. At the end of the day, we have many suggestions, comments, goals and parameters within which to make our decisions, but at some point we also have to acknowledge that common sense is a value to follow as well.
We are looking forward to having open and honest discourse with our community over the next week during two public listening sessions:
• Thursday, February 12, 6 to 8 p.m., at Bryan Station High School, 201 Eastin Road
• Monday, February 16, 6 to 8 p.m., at Tates Creek High School, 1111 Centre Parkway (Ed. note: this listening discussion has been rescheduled to Feb. 24 at Millcreek Elementary, 6-8 p.m.)
This evening, we finalized the organizational details for the public forums designed to ensure that we can hear comments from a maximum number of citizens. Each committee member will be seated at a table with available chairs for roughly two dozen community members. We have identified five questions to guide the conversations, and we will ask participants to write down their comments so that we can capture their thoughts verbatim. We will have maps of all the proposals available that evening for community members to review and discuss.
All of the feedback will be transcribed word for word and shared with the entire community.
There are many ways for you to be involved in this process. Materials, including links to videos of the work from our meetings, are being posted online at www.fcps.net/zones. We also have an online engagement tool called “Let’s Talk,” where you can submit comments and they will be shared with the entire committee. Please visit www.fcps.net/letstalk to submit input.
Please allow me to again underscore that every committee member is sharing every piece of input they receive with the entire group. Submitting multiple comments through Let’s Talk and following up with individual emails to me and other committee members is not necessary to ensure that you are heard. We are listening and your comments are taken very seriously.
Thank you for being a part of this very important effort.
Sincerely,
Alan Stein
School Rezoning Committee Chairman
