Black Women in The South Discussion

In July 2015, Sandra Bland, a 28-year-old Black woman was found dead in her jail cell after being arrested following an altercation with a state trooper. Police called it suicide, but protesters around the country charged that it was a case of racially-charged violence. Less than a year later, a 21-year-old black woman—a student at U of L—was verbally and physically assaulted by members of the crowd-turned-mob at a Donald Trump Rally.

These incidents prompted a conversation at the Carnegie Center about Black women who make their lives in the South. What are the challenges of remaining in a region that has historically marginalized, and continues to disregard or remain unaware of, the voices and experiences of Black women?

Carnegie Center has invited four African-America women writers and scholars who currently live in the South and whose work engages these issues, to spearhead this discussion in our community. Join authors Nikky Finney, Dr. Nazera Wright, Crystal Wilkinson, and Bianca Lynne Spriggs unpack this topic. KET’s Renee Shaw will be the moderator.
