Fall Fashioned Cocktail

As seasons change, restaurants adjust their menus, and we tend to switch up our drink of choice. Incorporating seasonal variations of standard ingredients is a great way to adjust your favorite classic cocktail for a new season. And just in time for National Bourbon Heritage Month, this bourbon-based cocktail drink turns to black walnut bitters and a simple syrup made with sorghum – a traditional Kentucky ingredient similar to molasses in consistency, but bolder in flavor – to usher in autumn.
Ingredients:
• 2 ounces bourbon
• 1/2 ounce sorghum syrup
• 1 ounce chilled club soda
• 3 dashes walnut bitters
• 3 maraschino cherries
• 2 orange slices
Sorghum Syrup:
Prepare sorghum syrup by boiling a half cup of water. Pour boiling water into a small glass jar with half cup sorghum. Stir mixture thoroughly. Refrigerate in covered jar for up to two weeks.
Method:
In a rocks glass, muddle one orange slice and two cherries, and set aside the remaining fruit for garnish. Add bourbon then fill with ice. Add club soda. Mix drink between rocks glass and small mason jar three times back and forth, letting the drink finally land in your choice of glass – rocks glass or jar. Garnish with cherry and orange wheel. This cocktail can be strained and served neat with an orange peel garnish if you prefer a smoother drink.
